in this Circular regarding the submission of abstracts, excursions, registration
fees, accommodations and deadlines.
Welcome to the country of
the golden lillies. This is the country of thousand year tradition. In
the country of Bosnia for ages different nations and cultures have found
their home. Here, like no where else in the world, the nature has determined
cultural development.
Bosnia and Herzegovina with
the area of 52 000 km2
is one of the most diverse regions in this part of Europe. It has extremely
high level of biological, ecological and geomorphological diversity. This
area has the highest level of cultural diversity. Bosnia and Herzegovina
is trully multicultrural and tolerant environment.
Here you can find still
clean and clear mountain rivers and brooks, mountain glacier lakes. Here
mountain peaks kiss clear blue sky. This is the country of the sea, rivers,
mountains, diverse plants, singing birds and other animals which found
their sanctuary in numerous refugia and relic habitats. Here are also exist
development centers with ongoing processes of endemogenesis and creation
of new plant and animal species. This is simply heaven in this part of
the Earth.

Opening ceremony on 18 May 2003 at 19:00 will take place in the National Theatre located in the Center of Sarajevo (Obala Kulina Bana Street 9).
The Registration Office and Information Center will be located at the entrance of the Congress center at the Hotel Holiday Inn (Ground floor). It will be open during Symposium hours and on Saturday and Sunday (May 17-18).
Hotel Holiday Inn is located only ten minutes on foot from the city center, about five minutes from the railway station, and some 5-6 km from the airport or just 10 minutes by car (taxi price is up to 10 euro).
Sarajevo is connected with
all bigger airports in Europe. There are direct flights to Vienna, Budapest,
Ljubljana, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Munich, Zagreb, and Belgrade.
There is also very good road network to Adriatic Sea, Zagreb and Belgrade.

"Plant resources in creation of the new values" will be the main theme of the the Third International Balkan Botanical Congress. The sessions are organized to cover a broad spectrum of spatial and temporal scales, theories and applications, modeling and experimental approaches, at individual, population and community levels, based on species or other plant classification, with observations in time or space, taking into account interactions with climate, disturbance or management. We invite you to contribute to the discussion with a lecture or poster presentation at the congress sessions.

Speakers for the parallel
sessions are selected on the basis of scientific quality, connection to
the Congress main theme, information content and clarity of the submitted
abstracts. Some lectures in parallel sessions will be given by invited
speakers.
Time for presentations:
Plenary lectures: 35 min.
presentation + 5 min. discussion.
Key lectures in parallel
sessions: 25 min. presentation + 5 min. discussion.
Lectures in parallel
sessions: 15 min. presentation + 5 min. discussion.
All speakers must keep strictly to the time schedule and should not use the discussion time for completing their talks. The lecture rooms will be equipped with overhead projectors, computer projectors, and slide projectors for 50 x 50 mm frame slides. Speakers requiring other equipment must indicate this when submitting their abstracts.
There will be poster sessions
during which the authors will be present. For each Section will be organised
panel discussion.
All posters will be exhibited
during the specified Congress period.
Posters should be prepared as follows:
Outstanding posters presented
by student delegates will be considered for student poster awards. Students
who wish to be considered for an award should indicate to the Registration
Desk.
All accepted abstracts will be published prior to the Congress in an abstract volume, and distributed to the participants. Book of Abstracts will be available on request from publishers. The price is 25 Euro.
We intend to also publish
prior to the Congress a volume with the plenary lecture papers, which will
be distributed to the participants.
Special Issue will be organized
with a selected number of papers presented at the Congress. We kindly ask
authors to prepare papers in English. Detailed instructions will be submitted
to the authors. The publication will be indexed.
The official language for
lectures and posters will be English. There will be no simultaneous translation
to any other language. Simultaneous translation will be provided only for
some parts of the Opening Ceremony.
Acommodation for the Congress
is agganged by AVIO EXPRESS, official tour operator of the Third International
Balkan Botanical Congress.
All activities related to
accomodation are organised by the Congress Secretariat.

Student delegates must be
enrolled for degrees (MSc, PhD) at universities or other scientific institutions,
and must send a statement from the Head of Department or Registrar confirming
the student status.
The fee covers access to
scientific sessions, program and Congress publication, mid-Congress excursion,
coffee or tea during sessions, welcome party on Sunday. Costs for the pre-
and post-Congress excursions, Congress dinner and the touristic program
for accompanying persons are not included in the registration fee. They
should be paid together with the registration fee.
Refund policy
Registered delegates and
accompanying persons who are unable to attend the congress must cancel
their participation in written form until April 18, 2003 if they wish a
refunding of paid fees. No refunding request can be accepted after this
date. All refunds minus an administrative fee of 50 euro, will be processed
after the symposium.

All excursions are organised by AVIO EXPRESS, official tour operator of the Third International Balkan Botanical Congress.
Pre-Congress excursions
Pre-Congress excursion will
be organised in the region of the Central Bosnia, in the region of continental
Dinaric Alps, one of the most beautiful and one of the richest parts of
Bosnia-Herzegovina considering flora and vegetation.

Mt. Zvijezda- the canyon of the river Krivaja - Mt. Konjuh (serpentine
complex)-Sarajevo.
1. Olympic mountains Igman and Bjelasnica (please see the map) are real natural phenomena, with altitude above 2000 m. Bedrock is made of limestone and dolomites of various age with karstic forms of relief and very rich vegetation. From the foothills to the top of the mountain there are the following forest communities: Querco-Carpinetum illyricum, Querco-Ostryetum carpinifoliae, Fagetum moesiacae montanum, Seslerio-Fagetum moesiacae, Abietui-Fagetum dinaricum, Aceri-Fagetum subalpinum, Aceri-Fraxinetum, Pinetum mugii.
There is a large number of plant communities from the alliances of Seslerion juncifoliae, Oxytropidion dinaricae, Festucion bosniacae, Caricion ferrugineae in mountain belt.
On the whole vertical profile exist meadows from alliances: Festuco-Agrostion, Arrhenatherion, Pancicion, Bromion and Satureion subspicatae.
Special value to this region give inversion coniferous forests of Piceetum abietis inverzum, pristine forest reserve with Abieti-Piceetum, while in the subalpine belt there are communities of screes from alliances Saxifragion prenjae, Edraianthion jugoslavici and Amphoricariopn autariati.
2. Mountain Zvijezda (please see the map) is covered wit real Balkan tajgas. Here dominant role play communities Abieti-Piceetum, Piceetum montanum, Blechno-Abietetum, as well as a very rare communities Sphagno-Piceetum on peat bogs and silicate bedrock type. Real geomorphological phenomena make several caves. The Bijambare cave is the most important and the largest cave in this region.
The canyon of mountain river Krivaja is refugium of Tertiary flora and vegetation. Here dominant role play communities Seslerio angustifoliae-Ostryetum, Seslerio-Fagetum, and communities in the fissures of limestone rocks Edraianto-Dianthetum, together with numerous scree communities.
This is one of the largest serpentine-peridotite complexes. On this bedrock type grow numerous communities of relic pine forests Orno-Ericion serpentinicum, the communities from alliance Potentillion visianii and Polygonion albanicae.
3. Olympic mountain Jahorina (m) (please see the map), has attracted through centuries numerous botanist. It is geomorphologicaly and spatially linked with mountain Trebevic and Ravna Planina. Mt. Jahorina is a very diverse from floristic standpoint. Special values have communities of mountain and submountain turfs on limestone from alliances Seslerion juncifoliae and Festucion bosniacae, and on the silicate bedrock type Jasionon orbiculatae. This mountain is very rich in forests. Here a dominant role play comminities Abieti-Fagetum, Abieti-Piceetum. Communities of Seslerio-Ostryon are developed on on the slopes towards the river Miljacka.

Mid-Congress excursions (21 May 2003)
Participation in the mid-Congress
excursions on Wednesday May 21 is included in the Congress fee
for delegates and accompanying
persons. The indicated excursion duration includes travel time.The detailed
itinerery for each excursion will be prepared in advance.
a) Sarajevo- Konjic (dolomite complex) - Center of development of endemism
in the canyon of the
river Neretva-Mountain range: Mt. Cvrsnica, Mt. Cabulja, Mt. Prenj (12
hours).
b) Sarajevo-National park Sutjeska-Mountain range: Mt. Maglic, Mt. Volujak,
Mt. Zelengora (12
hours).
c) Sarajevo - Olympic mountains Igman and Bjelasnica (12 hours).
Post-Congress excursions
Post- Congress excursion is organised in wide area of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It covers a very large and divers area from an ecological and floristic standpoint.
From Sarajevo towards the town of Jajce (former capital of the state) there is pictoresque landscape. It is made of numerous communities: Querco-Carpinetum, Fagetum montanum, Luzulo-Fagetum, Querco-Ostryetum, as well as numerous meadows and arable fields. The town of Jajce is located on sedra barriers. In one of depressions is located the river Pliva with beautiful waterfall in the town of Jajce. The river Pliva is a tributary of the river Vrbas. Here are also located ancient fortresses. In this region is situated old town Travnik.
From the town of Jajce road leads to the western Bosnia through Petrovac plateau and foothills of mountains Klekovaca and Osjecenica. In this area is already visible influence of warmer air form the sea.
The program:
Day 1: Departure from the hotels at 8:00. Travelling through the towns of Travnik and Jajce towards the town of Bihac with short breaks. Arrival in the town of Bihac, dinner in the 3 stars hotel.
Day 2: After the breakfast, travelling to the waterfalls on the river Una at Martin Brod. Lunch package, and returning to the hotel. Dinner.
Day 3: The breakfast.Travelling via Bosanski Petrovac, Drvar, Bosansko Grahovo, Glamoc, with short breaks. Lunch package. Hotel accomodation in the 3 star hotel in the town of Livno. Dinner.
Day 4: The breakfast. Travelling to Mostar and Neum. Arrival in Neum in the afternoon, accomodation in 3 stars hotel. Dinner.
Day 5: The breakfast. Visiting to the Mediterranean region.
Day 6: The breakfast.
Travelling to Sarajevo with short breaks at Nature park Hutovo Blato and
at the spring of the river Buna and Blagaj. Lunch. Arrival in Sarajevo
in the afternoon.

Visit to Herbarium at National Museum
During the Congress it will
be possible to visit herbarium collections at National Museum. The herbarium
stores two collections: European collection and collection of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
This are the richest herbarium collections on the Balkans with more than
two million specimens.

Passport and visa
The entry formalities for
Bosnia-Herzegovina vary according to the country of origin. Citizens from
certain countries may need a visa. Please contact your travel agent or
the local Bosnian Consulate.
Sarajevo is known by its
famous blossom in May, beautiful gardens, clean water and rich greenery.
Rain protection may be needed for short showers or longer rain periods
that may occur from time to time. A light sweater or jacket is recommended
for excursions to the highlands.
Mean May temperatures in
Sarajevo range between 18 C and 20 C.
It will be necessary to
wear warmer wind jackets and terrain footwear during field trips.
Activities for Accompanying Persons
A program including tourist
and cultural activities will be arranged for accompanying persons. Details
